Fit For The Call Spiritually || Get Your Life (Part 3) || Pastor Michael Kilpatrick

Sep 18, 2023

Are you fit to do what you are called to do? Is your life in shape to be able to not just execute, but advance and overcome the challenges that comes along with what God has called you to do?

To get your life in order (Get Your Life Part 1) you have to be in proper alignment (Get Your Life Part 2). For your life to remain in order and alignment, you have to be devoted to getting in shape, and that must first begin spiritually (this blog).

We don’t often hear discussions in ministry regarding fitness but with the messages and content the Lord has given us a passion to release, you will through Fit Life Church.

For the live YouTube message this blog is derived from, see the embedded video at the end of this article.

Fitness and Being In Shape

Let’s start with an understanding of what it means to be fit and in shape from Oxford Languages.

As an adjective, "fit" means...

  • of a suitable quality, standard, or type to meet the required purpose.
  • in good health, especially because of regular physical exercise.

To be in shape means...

  • in good physical condition.

Regardless of what your calling is, it is highly unlikely if you are going to be fit for what you are called to be if...

  • Spiritually you do not have an intimate relationship with the One who gave you the call and gives you the instructions to fulfill it.
  • Mentally you don't believe you can do what your call requires or grow in competence so you can be confident in what you are called to do.
  • Physically you don't do what is required to develop and maintain your body so you can show up and execute at maximum capacity in your calling.

Fit For The Call Spiritually

In this blog, let's focus on what it means to be fit for the call spiritually.

Spiritual Alignment

“I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.” John 15:5 ESV

Stop trying to pursue your calling and purpose in your own strength. You cannot produce anything in your calling that will last apart from the One who gave you the call.

Abiding in God our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, is our act of being spiritually fit. Spiritual alignment entails being in a continual intimate relationship with Jesus and obeying His word and instructions, given to us by way of the Holy Spirit who lives on the inside of us.

Submit To The Spiritual Fitness Coach

“For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives.” It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline? If you are left without discipline, in which all have participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. Besides this, we have had earthly fathers who disciplined us and we respected them. Shall we not much more be subject to the Father of spirits and live? For they disciplined us for a short time as it seemed best to them, but he disciplines us for our good, that we may share his holiness. For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it. Therefore lift your drooping hands and strengthen your weak knees, and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be put out of joint but rather be healed.” Hebrews 12:6-13 ESV

God is our spiritual fitness coach. Are you obeying His instructions? Just like a regular fitness coach, He disciplines us and provides instruction regarding what to do and how to do it.

You are expected to maintain proper form and discipline even when your coach is not looking or around. The same applies with our Spiritual Fitness Coach. Whether you feel like He is watching, near, paying attention or not, you are to maintain the disciplines He is instilling in you when you are aware of His presence.

Discipline hurts at times but just as we desire the results in the natural from discipline, so too should we desire the results that come from being disciplined spiritually.

God disciplines us because He loves us and wants us to achieve the results that comes with being disciplined spiritually. So guess what that means you must do? Endure!

Spiritual Training Book/Guide

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17 ESV

What source are you going to when it comes to pursuing your calling? Spiritually, God must be your primary source. One of the ways He speaks to us is through His Word, the Holy Bible. This is our spiritual training book and guide! As seen in this verse, it has been made accessible to us for training in righteousness. That is spiritual fitness.

Other books, professionals, and coaches are great resources but they must be secondary. They must be like supplements for deficiencies that God is leading us to utilize as He recommends and sees fit as your God/Spiritual Fitness Coach.

The scriptures are not to be used as a resource to help you be a good person. It is to train you in righteousness. The way you utilize the Bible reveals your pursuit: to be a good person or be trained in righteousness. You will be come a good person when you engage in training in righteousness but you can't be trained in righteousness by simply trying to be a good person.

Your calling is a good work you must engage in. The training you get from the scriptures equips you to be fit for the call on your life. Utilize this primary resource. It contains the details for your spiritual fitness plan to be fit for what you are called to be.

Spiritual Training

“Have nothing to do with irreverent, silly myths. Rather train yourself for godliness; for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.” 1 Timothy 4:7-8 ESV

Eternity does not begin when we die, it begins when we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior. In light of eternity, this life is a fragment of what is forever for us. We are not to just live for this life but the life to come.

Getting in shape/fit spiritually is the foundation of being fit for the call. Be trained in godliness. Training is important because it affects your present and your future. Reflect and evaluate: Are you training yourself in godliness or is your life filled with worldliness and the pursuits towards what it has to offer?

Spiritual Nutrition

“For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food, for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child. But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.” Hebrews 5:12-14 ESV

Heard the saying "you are what you eat"? What are you feeding on spiritually?

If you are in the faith but struggling with living righteously, you are spiritually receiving nourishment from spiritual milk, which means you may be new to the faith. If so, it's ok. We have all been there and have to grow and mature over time, just like a child. However, if you are not new to the faith, realize that you are not growing properly. Stop being on milk when you should be on solids.

If you are more mature in the faith, you have the power of discernment. Notice it is a continual, constant practice. You never arrive. Nutrition supports your training. Stay on solids through continual practice so you don't have to regress back to spiritual milk.

Operating in one's calling is for the mature. You need to be able to distinguish good from evil, especially when it comes to your calling. Take your spiritual nutrition seriously.

Execute The Plan

“But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.” James 1:22-25 ESV

You can read and watch videos on how to do certain exercises but you have to actually do the exercises and apply what you have learned to obtain a physical transformation and get fit/in shape. Likewise, you can hear God speaking to you through His written and spoken word but it is important that you actually do what He says. If you are hearing Him but not obeying Him, you do not have a revelation of who you are or who you are in Him.

Want to see and experience blessings in your calling? Be a doer who acts! Act upon what the Lord instructs you to do. Execute His plan and see what you put your hands to blessed. This is a vital component of being fit for the call spiritually: Be a doer, not just a hearer!

Spiritual Strength

“He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength. Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.” Isaiah 40:29-31 ESV

Stop going on empty. You can't refuel yourself and last. The Lord must renew your strength. He is the source. To be fit for your calling spiritually, wait (look, hope, and expect) for the Lord to lead you and guide you in your calling. If you really want to soar and have longevity in what you are called to do, you must be strengthened by the Lord. There are no other suitable replacements or supplements that will work.

Why do you need His strength? In different seasons of your life you need His strength to keep going as you pursue and fulfill the call on your life. Some seasons will require you to have speed and run. You need His strength so you don't get weary and quit or slow down. Other seasons will require you to walk. You need His strength so you don't faint in the process.

Rise Again Spiritually

When it comes to being fit for the call, it is important that we remember to pivot and make adjustments as led by the Holy Spirit as needed. When you fail, fall, or fumble, remember this verse...

“For though a righteous man falls seven times, he rises again” Proverbs 24:16

The goal is not perfection but progression. If you have fallen, rise again! Falling does not mean you are not fit for the call spiritually. Even the righteous fall. Being aligned to Christ allows you to rise again and empowers you to be go again in your calling.

Fit For The Call With FLC

“Because we know that this extraordinary day is just ahead, we pray for you all the time—pray that our God will make you fit for what he’s called you to be, pray that he’ll fill your good ideas and acts of faith with his own energy so that it all amounts to something. If your life honors the name of Jesus, he will honor you. Grace is behind and through all of this, our God giving himself freely, the Master, Jesus Christ, giving himself freely.” 2 Thessalonians 1:11-12 MSG
